Make a Difference Day 2011

HandsOn Network and USA WEEKEND are once again joining together to foster community participation for Make A Difference Day: a national day of doing good.
On October 22, 2011, the NSAIE and our AmeriCorps VISTA members will be hosting and participating in direct-service volunteer activities that aim to deliver immediate relief, provide solutions, or meet the needs of the community. Past activities included:
- Accompanying Tohono O’odham elders to Coronado State Forest to collect yucca and bear grass for basket weaving.
- Cannon Ball Community Clean-up on the Standing Rock Sioux reservation in North Dakota; with the help of 20 Youth Group members.
- A Candlelight vigil to remember Victims of Domestic Violence in Blackfeet Nation.
- Tutoring children at a homeless shelter in Phoenix, AZ.
- Staffing a booth at the Central Peninsula Hospital Community Health Fair in Kenaitze Nation.
- Canned food drives in Guam.
- Conducting interviews with elders in Choctaw Nation.
- Community garden work at the Garden of Tomorrow in Phoenix, AZ.
- Posting volunteer opportunities in Red Lake Nation and White Mountain Apache Nation.
- Partnering with Humane Society of Cherokee County with the Cherokee Nation NSAIE VISTA.
- Bringing elders and first graders together to plant tulip bulbs in Sault Ste. Marie Tribal community, MI.
What will be accomplished this year? We invite you to make a difference in your own community by volunteering a few hours of your time to a local organization or project that will reap immediate benefits.
