The Wisdom of Elders Cookbook

The NSAIE self-published its first cookbook, the Wisdom of Elders: Traditional American Indian Food and Recipes, in 2001. This cookbook was a compilation of recipes submitted by American Indian elders. These elders believed that a cookbook of traditional recipes was a culturally appropriate method for distributing traditional knowledge while generating revenue for tribal programs. Additionally, because the cookbook was compiled from recipes that were of cultural significance to the elders, it was a way for the elders to participate in the development of new revenue sources for their programs. Those who purchased the cookbook receive the cultural wisdom so carefully preserved over the years, and those who participated in the recipe development brought back to life those food traditions that had been lost to the past.

The proceeds from the Wisdom of the Elders Cookbook support our projects and member tribe activities in the field. If you would like to purchase a cookbook or membership for yourself or as a gift, please click the Purchase Now image below.
